What is Mindful Eating, anyway?

Great question!

The concept of mindfulness, in general, is focused on being present. It means you’re focused on what you’re doing at any given moment—you aren’t stressed about the future or ruminating on the past.

If you’re taking a shower, you feel the waterfall over your shoulders instead of mapping out your day or criticizing your thighs. If you’re reading a book, you’re concentrating on the words on the page—your mind isn’t wandering, and you don’t have to re-read paragraph after paragraph. (We’ve all been there!)

If you’re enjoying the sunshine on the beach, you’re enjoying the sunshine on the beach. You’re feeling the rays, not stressed about how you look in your bathing suit. You’re definitely not wondering what that woman a few towels over might be thinking of you or if you look bad from a certain angle…

When mindfulness is applied to food, it means bringing that sense of calm and presence to the act of eating. We can enjoy eating and release the negative thoughts and beliefs we’ve gathered about food and our bodies over time. We learn to really hear our body’s cues—we can tell when we’re hungry, when we are nourishing our body, and when we’re full.
